"GREEN" Dry Cleaning - Safer for you and environment

Safer Dry Cleaning: Zoots, operates “green” dry cleaning stores in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States and which was recognized by Inc. magazine in 2006 as one of the top 50 green companies in the U.S.

Many people are unaware of possible health risks posed by dry cleaning solvents used by most dry cleaners.

ZOOTS dry cleaning process is different from the industry norm because we do not use perchloroethylene (“perc”), the primary cleaning solvent used by over 85% of dry cleaners.

The EPA has identified perc as a probable carcinogen and a hazardous air pollutant. It has been linked to many serious health problems including several types of cancer and birth defects. Many dry cleaners disguise their use of perc by using misleading words to describe their cleaning process.

Some even use terms such as chemical free, earth friendly or environmentally safe. However, these dry cleaners are often using perc, a probable carcinogen.

ZOOTS’ cleaning is healthier for you and your family and safer for the environment.

• ZOOTS uses a non-toxic, odorless cleaning process that has been thoroughly tested and proven to cause no short or long term health risks.

• Our cleaning agent is 100% biodegradable so it’s completely safe for the environment.

• Our perc-free cleaning process is gentler on your clothes and leaves them without that “dry cleaning” smell.

Problem with this article is this: while the Stemberg/Staples crew have been very effective at getting their "fluff" media stories published, the facts they offer are just not true! The solvent Zoots uses is known by the trade name DF-2000 and is manufactured by Exxon. Only after Exxon convinced the state of California that theirs was a better "Earth Friendly" solvent than Perc, did Exxon release their MSDS for DF-2000. In short, Exxon's solvent is more of an air pollutant than Perc and contributes to smog; it is every bit the water contaminate that Perc is; and is worse than Perc as a soil contaminate! "Earth Friendly" from the folks who brought you the Valdez? Now it serves California right for falling for this, but Zoots knew these facts long ago and continues to claim to be more "Earth Friendly" than your local cleaners - they're not. In the end, it hardly matters as Zoots is nearing the end of their day as a business - still unable to organically raise their revenues and going onto their 3rd CEO in six years (which matches the number of CFO's they've had in six years). Maybe the conscience of those folks were bugging them? Or maybe the folks who gave them $100 million see misleading marketing efforts as the only chance they have of getting any of their money back.
